Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Reveal International Premiere for JUNK WORLD, Takahide Hori's Prequel Film

Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announces that its 50th annual event will screen the international premiere for JUNK WORLD, the prequel film directed by Takahide Hori, as part of its "Midnight Madness" screenings. The event will take place from September 4-14, with the full schedule to be released on August 12.

JUNK WORLD is a stop-motion animated prequel film set 1,042 years before the story of the first film, JUNK HEAD. The film follows the protagonist robot, Robin, who also appeared in the first film, as humans and artificial lifeforms investigate anomalies at an underground city that is supposedly a ghost town.

The film was announced in 2023 and took three years to make. Hori handled all major duties, including directing, scriptwriting, character design, editing, music, storyboards, modeling, and voice acting. The film opened in Japan on June 13 and will now be showcased at TIFF.

The original JUNK HEAD film was released by Anime Limited, and a new theatrical cut debuted in March 2021. The film won the Cigogne d'or prize for animated film at the 2021 Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival.
