This is Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu, a cultural spectacle that has evolved into a grand stage where ancestral heritage meets the future of Indonesian tourism.

More than just a performance, Segoro Topeng is the colossal presentation of Tari Topeng Kaliwungu, a sacred dance originating from Kaliwungu Village, Lumajang. Since its grand debut in 2022, the event has become not only a regional pride but also a new face for culture-based tourism promotion.

The name “Segoro Topeng” itself is born from the union of two powerful elements: “Segoro” (Indian Ocean), representing the beauty of the southern coast, and “Topeng” (mask), symbolizing the rich cultural values of the local heritage. This combination creates an unforgettable experience where traditional art directly converses with nature.

Each year, the event carries a new theme, always rooted in compelling storytelling. The 2023 theme “Kidung Katresnan” (A Love Song) explored tales of love and sacrifice. In 2024, “Legenda Argasonya” brought local mythology to life. This year’s theme, “Mystical of Kaliwungu”, delves into the magical and spiritual aspects of the village where the dance was born.

Far beyond entertainment, Segoro Topeng serves as a destination branding strategy for Lumajang Regency. Its aim is clear: to transform culture into a tourism magnet, harmonizing tradition with the beauty of nature to create a deeply meaningful visitor experience.

“This event not only inspires tourists but also touches the hearts of local residents especially the younger generation. It invites them to reconnect with and take pride in the cultural heritage of their ancestors through a majestic, modern, and proud expression,” said Yuli Harismawati, Head of the Lumajang Tourism Office, in a press release on Friday (June 27, 2025).

Moreover, this event becomes a platform of expression for dancers, musicians, costume designers, as well as MSMEs and creative economy players. All work together to present a timeless cultural performance, one that stands proudly alongside international festivals.

With hundreds of dancers involved, every movement, mask color, and music beat is the result of a vast creative collaboration. They do more than perform; they weave an inclusive and empowering story of Lumajang’s identity.

The year 2025 marks a milestone. For the first time, Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu is officially included among the 110 Karisma Event Nusantara, a prestigious list by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia. This recognition further strengthens Lumajang's position on both the national and international tourism maps.

This two-day event is packed with a vibrant series of activities. On June 28, it opens with an environmental initiative called “Sustainable Coast, Welcoming Casuarina”, a tree-planting event along the beach that proves how cultural celebration can coexist with ecological preservation.

The same day, the mood lightens with Reggae Sunset, featuring music as a universal language that brings everyone together. Meanwhile, the local MSME exhibition showcases handcrafted products by Lumajang’s creative entrepreneurs, ready to enter global markets.

The second day, June 29, brings the festivities to a climax. The Mahameru Fishing Festival livens up the morning with the joyful unity of fishermen and tourists. The Batik Lumajang Fashion Show proves that local wisdom can be both elegant and contemporary.

As dusk falls, the most anticipated moment arrives: the grand sendratari (dance drama) Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu. Before thousands of spectators, the beachside stage transforms into an enchanting mystical realm. Lights, music, and dance movements merge into a powerful, emotional harmony.

The Lumajang Regency Government places great hopes on this event. They envision Segoro Topeng not just as an annual celebration but as a symbol of cultural transformation, a driving force for both sustainable economy and tourism.

As Lumajang grows in popularity as a travel destination, Segoro Topeng will be developed into a comprehensive cultural tourism package, providing not only spectacles but also immersive, soul-stirring experiences for visitors.

It is not far-fetched to imagine Segoro Topeng standing alongside the world’s premier cultural festivals in the near future. Especially since Lumajang recorded the highest number of international tourist visits in East Java in 2024, an extraordinary achievement.
